A WRITER’S SETTING:

Coming home, after a long day, and finding time to write can be a daunting task. But the place you come home to, in my experience, can make a huge difference. Whenever I walk towards our cottage, and see it set high up amongst the trees (like a little tree house), my heart seems to lift a little. I feel a joy creeping back into my tired bones. My mood lifts and I cannot wait to see my family, love on my animals, and make myself cosy at home. The view I have from the cottage is truly magnificent, and very conducive to writing. There is a great selection of various trees and tall palms. The birds are always singing and calling to each other. I can stand and watch them play in the treetops for ages. At night we have seen various types of owls. And you can often spot the Tawny Frogmouth owls sitting motionless in the trees during the day. They are masters of disguise, and it is fascinating to see how they can flatten and point their bodies to look like broken tree branches. The trees around us shield us from the heat of the sun during the hot days we can sometimes get here in Queensland. What I love the most about the cottage setting is the garden path that we created and the spiral staircase that leads to the entrance. Once on the top deck, looking around is an absolute delight. Surrounded by nature, I feel as though I can leave the day behind. I often take a last look at the surroundings before I go inside. And whenever I can, I sit at my desk to write, so that I can have a view out the window to inspire me.
